Boot Sizing
Approximate sizing for Sure Grip, Riedell, Vanilla and other derby/speed boots.
Most derby and speed boots are made to standard men's sizing. Which means for men you would usually order your normal street shoe size and for women you would order 1 to 1 ½ sizes smaller than your street shoe. There are variations in several boots which we list below. You can size your foot using a standard 12" measuring stick, a soft tape, a printable chart (provided below) or a professional skate measuring stick. If using a 12" ruler, place the ruler up against a flat wall and place your heel against the wall. Standing on the ruler measure the length to your longest toe on each foot. After measuring the width of the foot (listed below), please call us at 914-771-7100 for accurate sizing on your boot of choice. The printable measuring guides below are a great place to start but we also recommend ruler measurement as confirmation.
Sure Grip, Riedell, Labeda Derby/speed Boots are manufactured using men's sizing. Again, men order your normal street shoe size and women please order 1 to 1½ sizes smaller than your street shoe. Vanilla (Derby boots only) are manufactured to women's sizing. Men must order 1 size up.
We do not recommend using a Riedell stick for Sure Grip Boots and vice versa as the sticks are just over a 1/2 size different for each company.
For Riedell men’s and women’s boots made on the original “248” last (122, 125, 195, 595 and 695) and measuring on the Riedell stick (standing), add ½ size. This should be approximately the same as normal street shoe size for men and one full size smaller than normal street shoe size for women.
For boots made on the “395” last (265, 395, 811, 911, 951, 126, 965, and 1065) the size on the Riedell stick should be fairly close to correct. This should be approximately ½ size smaller than normal street shoe size for men and 1 ½ smaller than street shoe size for women. The models 126, 965 and 1065 are made with a medium ball and a narrow heel. The 265 and 595 are a full cut boot.
The “395” last is the same as the original “248” last except it has more height in the toe box. This allows the foot to fit a little closer to the end of the boot and is why boots made on the “395” sometimes feel bigger.
The Last is the overall width of the boot. Today's boots come in both a standard "D" width and a narrower "BD" last which means they are a narrower "B" width in the heel and a standard "D" width in the toe box. The shape of the toes and the width of the foot also effect sizing greatly. A foot with a “square” toe shape will need more room at the end of the boot than a narrow foot or a foot with a more pointed toe shape.
* When ordering any “special make up” boot in different colors or special widths, it is always advisable to first try on a stock boot to make sure the sizing is correct. Special order boots are not returnable.
